What electronics have been banned from landfills?

As of January 1, 2012 these electronic times are prohibited from disposal in Illinois Landfills in accordance with the “The Electronics Products Recycling and Reuse Act”.

Where can I recycle my old electronic items? 

Residents can drop off small quantities (7 or fewer) of electronics – at no charge – at Southern Recycling Center, JCHD’s electronics recycling partner, during regular business hours. Please email angiek@jchdonline.org or call at 618-684-3143, ext. 136, for more information.

How can I participate in local recycling?

Contact your waste hauler to determine if curbside recycling is offered where you live.

For people living in apartments or in rural areas, there are local recycling stations at:
 • Jackson County Health Department 415 Health Dept. Rd., Murphysboro
 • University of Illinois Extension Office, 402 Ava Rd., Murphysboro
 • City Lot, Rock Crusher Road, Campbell Hill
 • Intersection of Main Street & Keller Highway, Ava

Materials accepted are glass bottles and jars, aluminum and steel cans, plastic bottles #1 and #2, newspaper, cardboard and paperboard, magazines, catalogs, phonebooks, junk mail, and office paper.

Where can I get recycle bins?

Contact your waste hauler to inquire if curbside is offered at your residence, if not contact Jackson County Health Department at 618-684-3143, ext. 128.
