Volunteer Opportunities

Clerical Support Volunteer
would make copies, file, stuff envelopes, assist with data entry, provide phone reception, data entry, put up bulletin boards, help with records management, assist in converting documents from WordPerfect to MS Word and various other support tasks. Would like volunteer for at least 5 hours/week. Current needs are for follow-up calls to clients and overdue for fluoride varnish, HPV vaccine and someone to organize sexual health clinic file information.

Diabetes Prevention and Education
Jackson County Health Department works with SIH and local churches to provide this programming. As a part of this programming, volunteers would assist with educational and screening events held in the community.

Women, Infant, Children (WIC) Program
This is a program serving pregnant women and families with young children. Volunteers would assist with appointment reminders, assisting clients with forms, updating community resource lists and various other support tasks. Would also like a volunteer to create internal educational videos. Would like volunteer for at least 5 hours/week.

Outreach HIV Testing
Testing clinics are held each Thursday from 2 to 6 pm, with sites switching bi-weekly between the Newman Catholic Student Center and the Long Branch Coffee House. We would ask the volunteer to commit to at least 4 clinics. The volunteer would greet those coming for the testing and assist in getting paperwork filled out. They could also observe the testing process and learn more about services for those HIV+.

Coordinated School Health (CSH)
A collaborative program between the Health Department, SIU Ctr for Rural Health Social Svc Dept, and So. IL. Healthcare to provide health education and skill building to school staff, families and children at schools.

Jackson County Healthy Communities Coalition
This coalition of over 100 local organizations is focused on improving health in Jackson County. Meetings are held the 4th Thursday of odd months at the Carbondale Township office. Volunteers can become involved in a wide array of Action Teams which are conducting community health planning and programming.

Nutrition Education and Advocacy
A collaborative program between the Health Department, local farmers’ markets, and convenience store owners to increase access to healthy nutrition. Education, advocacy, and technical assistance is provided.

Immunization Programs
This program provides services focused on communicable disease prevention efforts for persons of all ages. Volunteers could help organize clinics, monitor supplies and equipment, assemble charts, update brochures, answer phones, and provide reception responsibilities, data entry and other various tasks.

JCHD Events 

Household Chemical Collection Events
Annual events that provide free, environmentally safe way to recycle or dispose of household chemicals such as paint, oil, cleaners or solvents and paints. This program helps keep these items from our landfills. Volunteers would assist with traffic control and screening participants.

Shred Day Events

Annual events that provide free collection of private information from residents. The information collected is shredded on site. This program helps keep these items from our landfills. Volunteers would assist with traffic control and screening participants.
