What is BCG?
- BCG, or bacille Calmette-Guerin, is a vaccine for tuberculosis (TB) disease. Many foreign-born persons have been BCG-vaccinated due to high prevalence rates in other countries. BCG vaccine has never been routinely used in the United States.
- BCG may cause a positive skin test in someone who is not infected with TB bacteria. If a TB skin test is positive, additional tests may be needed.
- If you have had BCG, the recommended screening test for you is the TB blood test. Contact the TB nurse for more details at (618) 684-3143, ext. 151.
