What are the requirements for abandoned wells?
Sealing of abandoned wells is required as they pose a safety hazard and are a potential source of groundwater contamination. Jackson County Health Department must be notified at least 48 hours before sealing. A licensed contractor must be used or a property owner may seal their own well if they work with the Health Department to ensure the appropriate materials and procedures are followed. This form must be completed and submitted to the Health Department following sealing. Call the Environmental Health Division at 618-684-3143 ext. 128 for more information.
